Inspection and maintenance of steel roof and wall cladding systems
How often should inspections take place?
They should be carried out periodically through the building’s lifetime. It is difficult to quantify how often as different building locations and designs will demand different levels of maintenance. It is suggested that the building be inspected after the first year of occupation to assess future maintenance requirements and the duration required between inspections.
In line with Health & Safety Executive (HSE) latest Working at Height Regulations, every effort must be made to avoid having to go on to the roof to facilitate inspections. It may be possible to inspect the roof from a cherry picker, an access hatch or with binoculars from ground level or adjacent buildings.
Build up of dirt and debris
A build-up of dirt and debris can occur on all surfaces, on all elevations and on roof cladding. Such build-up will be particularly profound at any irregularity, such as at corners, penetrations and gutters. In some environments such as industrial estates and areas close to busy roads, dirt will build up more quickly than elsewhere.
Rainfall will have a degree of washing effect. However, any area of the building sheltered from rain, for example the top of roller doors or overhanging eaves, will not benefit from this natural cleaning effect.
Cleaning
Large quantities of debris can also lead to the overflowing or ponding of water, particularly in guttering, which may also lead to corrosion. To avoid this, debris should be swept into a pile, using a stiff, soft-bristled brush and removed. Shovels or hard tools should be avoided. All dirty areas should then be washed down using clean water. Do not use salt water or high pressure jets with a hose. If necessary use a recommended cleaning product, or a 10% solution of a good household or industrial detergent, before applying a final hose down with clean water. A soft-bristled brush can be used for particularly stubborn deposits.
Oil can be removed by wiping the area with white spirit before cleaning and rinsing as for general dirt and debris.
In some areas birds can be a nuisance. A build-up of bird droppings can occur on roofs and this may significantly alter the pH of the surface water run-off. Buildings used as communal roosts, where an excessive build-up of bird droppings is possible, should be regularly monitored and cleaned down.

Health And Safety Training In Schools
The compensation culture is still going strong and it seems we need to have health and safety training just to sneeze these days. In fact, I bet, somewhere in this crazy world, someone has managed a compensation claim from a higher authority after a place wasn’t thoroughly dusted, bringing on a sneezing fit and causing a whiplash injury.
This need for health and safety training to cover every possible eventuality has put tremendous pressure on businesses and authorities and makes our lives that much less enjoyable. Companies fear getting sued for not implementing health and safety training for features of the workplace that would otherwise have been expected to be put down to common sense. Receiving thousands of pounds in compensation because your contract does not state that you shouldn’t balance a chair on a chair on a table and then try to stand one legged to change a light bulb is simply ludicrous.
These difficulties have reached as far down the scale as to be seen as a problem even in the school classroom – and not by teachers, but by pupils. Children have accidents. They have a distinct lack of fear and will push boundaries continually to work out their own limits. So how come, then, was 2 pounds million paid out in compensation in one year alone to pupils?
The claims worked out to be the equivalent of one a day and they were of the nature that would normally have been put down to general accidents, the accidents of life that we should grow up getting used to dealing with instead of looking to place the blame on someone else or to not take responsibility for ourselves. Yet, in this world of money grabbing, everyone is looking for the first opportunity to make a fast buck and compensation claims are currently the way to go.
Manchester City Council recently paid out 5,000 pounds to a pupil who slipped on leaves in the playground. Well, excuse me but playing in leaves was a favourite childhood past time of many children, me included, and we never needed health and safety training to partake, slips and bumps were all part of the fun!
Another of those childhood games that have been around since time immemorial is ‘tag’. Yet one child in Rotherham was awarded over 21,000 pounds for a broken ankle that occurred during one such game. Granted, a broken ankle is going to hurt a lot and will involve time off but what is the alternative and how does it justify this sort of money?
A similar amount was given to a youngster with no health and safety training on how to use a climbing frame before falling off. No, there was no major head trauma of paralysis, just the usual childhood bumps and scrapes.
How does this possibly teach a child to grow into a responsible adult, to take responsibility for their own actions, to learn that life will have its ups and downs, it will have its scrapes and its pains and yes, it will still go on? Quite simply it won’t teach them and there are parents who would rather see the education system lost its money to ridiculous claims than spent on our children’s education itself.
Before much longer, these children will end up staying indoors, wrapped in cotton wool and undergoing extensive health and safety training for life rather than being outside in the fresh air enjoying themselves.

Banner Printing San Diego
Look at Me! – Custom, Full-color Banner Printing at http://www.sandlgraphicdesign.com/largeformat.html
Visual advertising takes many forms these days: billboards, automated marquees, giant animal balloons, even some poor guy dressed in a costume by the side of the road. But of all the confusion of ads competing for the average person’s attention, which is the most effective both in terms of cost and communicating a message? Take a look at custom, full-color banners.
What Exactly is a Custom Full-color Banner?
Custom banners communicate a message to their intended audience typically in a large, colorful format. Banners come in a variety of sizes and materials based on their intended use – indoors or outdoors – their intended audience, and length of service required. Banners have become more and more desirable as an advertising vehicle due to the wide range of customization options, price, and flexibility in placement. Modern reprographics technology allows organizations requiring a banner to do most of the design and layout themselves and then simply submit the design for printing. This can add considerable cost savings since there is no need to hire creative talent. Of course, most printers have in-house creative staffs ready to assist in the design and layout of custom banners.
How are Custom Banners Printed?
There are three methods of producing banners commonly in use today. The first is Vinyl Lettering in which each letter or graphic is printed on a vinyl, adhesive-backed substrate and then affixed to the banner material. This is a very labor-intensive process and tends to be used for small runs. The second process is Digital Printing which prints each banner on very large format printers, much like your office inkjet printer only on steroids. These printers use different inks depending on the type of banner and longevity desired. Billboard sized banners are often made out of several smaller digital print banners which are then sewn together to create the whole image. Digital print banners provide for a great deal of latitude in customization and the main cost involved is the material on which the banner is to be printed. The third banner printing process is Silk Screening. The silk screening process creates “stencils”, or screens, of the graphics to be used out of a fine mesh using a photographic process. The screens are then framed in wood or aluminum. Each stencil is then used to “lay-up” a color of ink on the banner by pulling a rubber squeegee over the screen with each color of ink. The process is repeated with each screen, eventually creating the graphic desired. This process is preferred for manufacturing many copies of the same banner.
Indoor or Outdoor ?
The wonderful thing about custom banners is the wide variety of installations that are possible. Banners can be installed across the outside of buildings, on fences, delivery truck side panels, between lamp posts…the list is endless. The main concern is whether the banner will be outdoors or indoors. Banners intended for use outdoors must be more ruggedly constructed and use special inks to withstand the weather, especially if the banner will be mounted for an extended period of time. Of course, these extra considerations add to the cost of outdoor banners relative to the same size indoor banner. Another factor to be considered when dealing with outdoor versus indoor banners is their visibility.
The average person viewing an outdoor banner typically has only a few seconds to make out and register the message contained on the banner. Therefore, outdoor banners should be attention grabbing, simple and properly sized. The size of the text will have the greatest influence on visibility. When calculating visibility, the average distance of the viewer from the banner must be determined. If the viewing audience is 100 feet from the banner, the text will have to be a minimum of 4 inches in height. As the viewer moves farther away, the size of the text increases exponentially. For example, a person standing roughly a city block away will not be able to see the message clearly unless the letters are 16 inches tall. At a quarter of a mile, the letters would have to be almost 5 feet tall!
Marketing Effectiveness
Comparing the marketing effectiveness of custom banners to other forms of advertising is a little tricky due to the sheer variety of uses for banners. If we consider their effectiveness compared against billboards, banners offer many advantages. Banners are generally much less expensive. Billboards are typically priced based on their “showings”. This is a rating which is calculated based on the number of people in a given population who will see the billboard. Billboards with higher showings can run to many thousands of dollars per month to lease and that’s not including the printing costs. Billboards have a fixed location and may share space with other advertisements. Banners can be easily moved for maximum viewing opportunities. Banners may also be re-used again and again as necessary.
Stand Out from the Crowd
Custom, full-color banners clearly have many advantages for communicating information to the public. Digital reprographics have revolutionized the ability of organizations large and small to spread their message in an eye-catching, creative and cost-effective manner. The only limitation is imagination and a place to show it off!

Five Important Points to Consider when Choosing a Walking Stick
The most important thing when choosing a walking stick is to get the correct height.
The easiest way to discover what height stick you need is to stand up straight with your arms to your side and measure the distance from your wrist to the ground, then this is the height you need.
It is important to find out more about the measurements of a walking stick on a website before you buy because sometimes the measurements shown describe the total height (i.e to the top of the handle) and sometimes it is the height from the ground to the underneath of the handle. This could mean a difference of up to a inch, depending on the handle type. Some sticks are sold as a one piece, fixed length item and others are adjustable.
The second consideration is the TYPE of handle that will best suit your needs.
There are generally quite a few different styles to choose from, all with their own special purposes. Derby walking canes are popular because the Derby style handle is designed to hook over the wrist to free up the hands when required. Crook handles offer the same benefit, hooking over the wrist or arm.
Anatomical shaped handles, i.e handles made of a resin or moulded plastic which fit the shape of the palms are the most comfortable handle type. These types of sticks are usually sold in a right and a left hand model and usually bought as a pair. They are best appreciated by people who rely heavily on a walking stick (or two).
Crutch handles provide a reassuring grip, promoting confidence in the user. Crutch handles are also lighter and generally smaller than other handle types.
The third thing to find out about a stick is the maximum weight it has been
tested to support.
Some sticks are stronger than others depending on the materials used to make the shaft. Carbide Walking Sticks are the strongest (and most lightweight) that money can buy. Other materials used are usually: Aluminium (for hiking poles, collapsible canes and folding sticks), wood ( Chestnut, Hazel, Beech, Ash and Hardwoods) or Bamboo. Aluminium is strong and lightweight, wood used for stick making is carefully selected, dried for a year and treated so is a reliable source for stick making and bamboo is flexible and strong.
Number four. Will the stick be for occasional or frequent use?
This is a very practical question you need to ask yourself to save you money and to get the perfect stick for you. If a stick is for occasional use (for instance, you may need something to lean on when in a queue) a foldable or telescopic stick is probably best. It is best to have a lightweight stick that folds or collapses down to a small size that can be kept in a handbag or rucksack when it is not needed so that you don’t need to unneccessarily carry around a walking stick.
A flip stick or foldaway seat is a good option if you need a seat when out and about when there might not be any available (i.e at an outdoor event such as a fair or in an airport). Flip sticks usually incorporate a seat and a walking stick (with handle)in one, so you have the choice of a quick seat or stick as required.
If a walking stick is going to be used for frequent use, then a lightweight stick with a comfortable handle is the best thing, or perhaps even two sticks to evenly distribute your weight and the pressure on your hands.
The fifth point to consider is where the walking stick will be used.
Will it be used around the house, for going to the shops and out and about, for walks in the countryside or to take away on holidays?
For use around the home, you will a stick with a rubber ferrule (tip) which provides a better grip on slippery surfaces than steel or brass ferrules. For general use around town, things to consider are the same as the previous points already mentioned.
For country walkers and hikers; lightweight hiking polesare an excellent choice as they are strong, lightweight and most importantly, adjustable. Usually sold as a pair, hiking poles can be easily and quickly adjusted in height. This is particularly useful for hill walking because you can shorten both sticks to ascend, lengthen to descend or have them at different heights for walking across a hill on a steep slope to help keep your balance.
There is a large choice of walking sticks on the market suitable for holiday makers. Any sticks that are foldable or collapsible compact down to a small size for luggage.
To summarize, the five most important points to consider when choosing a walking stick for yourself or for someone else are; the height needed, the best handle type to buy, strength and weight designed to support, how often the stick will be used and where.
